Title Background

Instrument Investment Programme

Severn Trent Services recently invested in an instrument investment programme to ensure all instrumentation in the laboratory is state of the art and able to meet regulatory requirements.

On an annual basis Severn Trent Services review all laboratory equipment and if required put in place an instrument investment programme. The review takes into account new technologies that may improve performance and robustness of current methodologies, the age of the equipment and whether capacity of the work stream is correct or needs enhancing.

As a result of a recent review Severn Trent Services will be introducing the following upgrades across our sites:

  • New high mass-resolution liquid chromatography mass spectometry system for pesticide analysis and potential identification of unknown polar organics
  • Upgrade to existing Liquid chromatography triple quad systems to improve robustness of pesticide analysis
  • Investment in gas chromatography triple quad systems for non polar pesticide analysis
  • Dual rail headspace GCMS systems for volatile analysis
  • New automation equipment in relation to the analysis of physical chemistry parameters
  • Replacement ICPMS equipment for metals analysis
  • Replacement continuous flow equipment for cyanide analysis
  • Automated sample handling instrumentation for the determination of fluoride by Ion Selective Electrode
  • Replacement equipment for the anion analysis by ion chromatography
  • Second liquid chromatography and gas chromatography triple quad systems at Wakefield for pesticide analysis
  • A second ICPMS system at Wakefield site for metals analysis
  • PSA Hydride system for mercury analysis
  • Replacement equipment for BOD analysis
  • Replacement equipment for purge and trap analysis of volatiles
  • Replacement GCMS system for PAH analysis

Severn Trent Services will also be introducing several new methods at our Wakefield site to ensure standardisation of processes across the business and will also offer backup of analysis from the other sites. These methods include:

  • Acid herbicides by LC triple quad
  • Non polar pesticides by GC triple quad
  • A new polar pesticides by LC triple quad
  • Paraquat and Diquat by LC triple quad
  • Oxidisibility
  • Reactive Silicate analysis
  • New ICPMS as backup to metals analysis
  • Upgraded GCMS identifications methodology to include deconvolution software

Severn Trent Services are committed to both standardisation as well as ensuring technologies are encompassing the latest developments in providing robust methodologies with in built capacity.
